MUMBAI: Western Railway (WR) will be able to open sixth line on a 12km stretch between Khar and Goregaon by March 2023 and the entire corridor by 2025.
Once the entire sixth line is opened by 2025, authorities may be able to increase the number of WR services by up to 20%. WR's general manager Ashok Kumar Misra said, "We have set a target to open the Khar-Goregaon stretch by March 2023."
At present, a fifth line exists from Borivli to Santacruz and from Mahim to Mumbai Central. The missing link between Mahim and Khar is due to a lack of space. Railways has now decided to redesign the alignment for the Harbour line in this portion to create space for the fifth and sixth lines. Work under a Resettlement and Rehabilitation scheme in coordination with the MMRDA is likely to remove encroachers on other stretches, especially Borivli, Goregaon-Andheri, and Vile Parle. -Manthan K Mehta
