Guwahati: A 17-year-old youth staged his own ‘kidnapping’ and demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh from his father on Thursday in upper Assam’s Jorhat district. He later brought down the ransom amount to Rs 5 lakh. But the drama flopped as the police caught him in a resort.
Jorhat SP, Mohan Lal Meena, said the youth, along with one of his friends, plotted the abduction drama to extract money from his father, a businessman. “While talking to his father and uncle, it came to light that the teenager had planned a similar abduction earlier to buy an
iPhone and a bike,” said Meena.
The father lodged a complaint with the police on Wednesday night stating that the youth had been kidnapped by someone from the Jorhat station on Wednesday and the kidnapper had demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh for his release initially and later brought down his demand to Rs 5 lakh.
“We checked the CCTV footage of the station and found the boy and his friend parking a bike there and driving off on another bike. There was no sign of kidnapping in the footage,” said Meena.
