S Jaishankar said countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America trust India to speak up for them. We have of late been at the forefront of expressing their concerns on fuel, food, fertilisers’.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar said the G20 presidency offers India an opportunity to share its story with the world and added that it is time the country become the voice of the global south.

He also said India being the mother of democracy, its presidency will be consultative, collaborative and decisive. “It is time when we must become the voice of the global south, which is otherwise under-represented in such forums,” Jaishankar said while addressing the University Connect Programme at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in New Delhi.

“Countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America trust India to speak up for them. We have of late been at forefront of expressing their concerns on fuel, food, fertilisers."

“World is very polarised. Even having everybody in the room was a real challenge in the last G20 meeting in Bali. A country like India, which is independent minded, has a middle ground to bring different parties to the table,” the minister said.

Jaishankar also noted the sufferings of the global south due to the polarisation. “The polarisation in the world may occur elsewhere, but people in the global south suffer the most. Our intentions would be to get leaders on what a large part of the world thinks,” he said.

“There are very good reasons why today the world is taking a much deeper interest in us. The G20 presidency offers an opportunity to share our story with others, particularly those who may transpose some of our experiences on their performance or challenges," Jaishankar added.
