NOIDA: The traffic police issued 40,694 challans and collected Rs 16.59 lakh as fines in November during its month-long awareness and enforcement drive which concluded on Wednesday.
Ganesh Prasad Saha, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), said, "We sensitised students and others about traffic safety rules. We also fined violators and seized 280 vehicles which were old and running in violation of NGT norms. From January to November, the traffic police issued 5.26 lakh challans and collected fines worth Rs 2.87 crore," he said.
The traffic police also took corrective measures on spots prone for accidents. "The traffic police and transport departments had earlier identified 35 black spots where frequent accidents took place. We made necessary changes and took measures at 20 spots," he said. The correcting measures include installing street lights near the 20 black spots, making suitable U-turns, road widening, road markings, proper signage, among others.
The traffic police organised a programme on World Day of Remembrance for road accident victims on November 20 and paid homage to the deceased.
As the temperatures have fallen and fog enveloped the city, the traffic police urged people to drive slowly and use reflective tapes on their vehicles for proper visibility. The police also voluntarily pasted such tapes on 920 vehicles.
