Govt decides to study accident cases in Goa
PANAJI: In view of the increase in road accidents, the North Goa district road safety committee on Tuesday decided to set up sub-committees at the local level to analyse each accident case.
Member of the committee and convenor of the Goa Consumer Action Network (GoaCan), Roland Martins said each accident site and case will be analysed by a representative of the PWD, traffic police and local police. He said all police stations will be notified to visit accident spots find out the reason and prepare reports.
The committee is headed by the district collector.
These sub-committees are being notified police station-wise he said, adding that some accidents are caused by drunken driving, rash and negligent driving and various other reasons, which include bad road engineering.
Elected members of local bodies are undergoing training for their roles in road safety.
TOI had reported that nature of roads are responsible for nearly a third of road accidents that take place in the state according to the Union ministry of road transport and highways.
Martins said the analysis of each accident case will then be shared and available on public domain.
“This will help local bodies solve the road safety and traffic management issue in their areas,” he said.
The excise department has been instructed to spread the message of not drinking and driving through signage at all bars and restaurants.
The issue of stray cattle and stray dogs also causing accidents on roads and highways was also taken into consideration and it was found that the animal husbandry department is not represented on the committee.
It was agreed to share data across departments and to monitor illegal hoardings distracting motorists.
“The transport department has agreed to identify the number of vehicles that have registered to display advertisement mounted on them,” Martins said.
Discussions were also held with regard to enhancing trauma facilities by directorate of health services.
