Kiran Bedi shares tips with women at Ficci Flo event
Ludhiana: The women’s NGO Ficci Flo on Tuesday organised a talk with ‘The Lady of Steel’ Kiran Bedi at a hotel located near Aarti Chowk here. The event kick-started with a dance performance by the students of DCM Presidency School depicting women empowerment. Commissioner of Police (CP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu and Joint CP (law and order) Saumya Mishra were also present.
Bedi inspired women to have entrepreneurial skills and contribute in GST production and making India a 5-trillion dollar economy. Ficci also honoured differently-abled women to encourage them.
Reminiscing about her childhood days at Amritsar, Bedi said, “I started playing tennis at the age of nine when I was studying at Sacred Heart, Amritsar. While I waited for my turn, I used to complete my homework at the tennis court. I have learned to manage time very effectively and become fearless.”
She added, “I used to run 3 miles back to my home after tennis class to stay fit. However, to overcome eve-teasers, I never tolerated them. Thus, childhood has made me fearless and bold, and strengthened my foundation.”
After getting a scholarship, she quoted about her university days at Chandigarh, “I used to sit under a tree so that I don’t fall asleep while studying. Also, I always carried more books than clothes when I was away for national and international tournaments.” She added that to manage time, she shred all the ‘liabilities’ in her life.
She also share many instances from her professional career including challaning the PM, training NCC cadets for traffic duty, and opening of the bridge in Goa, besides her work in the Tihar jail.
Talking about being the only female IPS officer of the 1972 batch, she said, “To overcome biases, I became physically strong and underwent equal training as my male colleagues. I continued to remain fit as well as forgiving. If a man is known for muscle, the women have hearts. So, women have an edge over men to change the society.”
She added women should focus on promoting sisterhood and strengthening themselves.
