Villa burglary: Cops look for a car with fake number plate
Greater Noida: Investigation into a burglary from a villa in a Greater Noida (West) gated society has led cops to a Maruti Swift car, which was parked nearby at the time thieves broke into the house and fled with jewellery and cash worth Rs 1.4 crore last week.
Police said on Monday that CCTV footage from the area showed the car had a fake registration number plate, possibly that of another stolen vehicle. For this reason, they can’t rely on ownership details and are now trying to trace the car’s location.
“The number plate on the Swift car is that of another SUV. We are now trying to track the vehicle’s movement based on its location. We cannot reveal that right now,” said Saad Miya Khan, additional deputy commissioner of police, Central Noida.
Cops said the CCTV clip showed some people loading objects into the car, which was parked close to the Amrapali Leisure Valley society.
Investigators also suspect that a person known to the family may be involved in the theft.
“We have started interrogating possible suspects, family members and other people related to the family. More than 20 people have been questioned. We suspect the role of an insider who knew the family’s schedule,” a senior officer said on the condition of anonymity.
On November 25, burglars fled with a locker – containing jewellery worth Rs 1 crore and cash worth Rs 40 lakh – from the villa owned by Shashi Bhushan Rai, the chief financial officer of a Delhi-based media company. In his complaint, Rai said the incident took place around 1-2pm, when he was at work.
