PUNE: Cybercriminals duped a 37-year-old software engineer from Bavdhan to the tune of Rs18.64 lakh on the promise of securing him a job at a prominent multinational software company.
The crooks made the techie transfer the money between November 2021 and February 2022 on pretext of creating his professional ID and even returning his money when he sought a refund, police said.
The techie filed a complaint application with the cyber police. The latter referred the matter to the Hinjewadi police on Saturday for formal registration of an FIR after verification of the application.
An officer, on condition of anonymity, said, “The crooks used 10 phone numbers to contact the victim. We have sought details from banks where the money was transferred.”
The complainant told TOI, “I received a call from a man claiming to be a representative of a placement agency. He told me that my resume was sent to a software company and that a representative from the said company would interview me. He told me to pay charges and sent me a link. He continued to demand money citing different reasons.”
