No service rules for perfusionists at SMS hospital for last 40 yrs
Jaipur: For over 40 years, the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital has been performing open heart surgeries, but the irony is that the state government has not formed service rules for perfusionists, who are key part of the cardiovascular surgical squad.
The open heart surgeries are used for treatment of muscles, valves, or arteries of the heart for improving the cardiac functioning.
At present, the Rajasthan Medical Relief Society (RMRS) provides perfusionists their daily allowance, but due to alleged financial constraints, the allowance may discontinue. In that case, SMS hospital may face difficulties in performing open heart surgeries in the absence of perfusionists.
A perfusionist plays key role in helping surgeons in cardiac operations as he operates extracorporeal circulation equipment, such as the heart-lung machine for maintaining blood flow to the body’s tissues during surgery. The hospital has three perfusionists working at cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS) department on daily basis. At the hospital, 5 to 6 surgeries are conducted daily with the help of perfusionists.
In absence of service rules an employee will not get permanent posting. The CTVS department has been demanding from the state government to form service rules for perfusionists at the SMS hospital. “The process is in progress as we have sent the proposal to the finance department,” said Rajkumar Yadav, head of CTVS, SMS hospital.
