Panaji: Urging tourists and locals to protect Goa’s water bodies, chief minister Pramod Sawant asked people to stop throwing waste into the state’s rivers. Speaking at the cleaning drive at Miramar beach, he said plastic bags with religious offerings damage the marine ecosystem.
“I see people stopping on the bridge and throwing plastic bags into the water. Please don’t throw any waste into the water because the same waste then washes up on beaches. Either keep it along the roads or put it in waste bins,” he said.
The Clean-A-Thon was held to mark the conclusion of the International Film Festival of India. During the drive, celebrities, government officials and students picked up waste strewn along the beach.
Sawant said that the state government is making an effort not stop dumping sewage into the rivers.
Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis’ wife Amruta and actor Jackie Shroff appealed to tourists not to pollute Goa by dumping waste along beaches and roads.
The drive was organised by the CCP and other NGOs.
