Ludhiana: Following orders of Punjab government, the Ludhiana police commissionerate has started checking both arms licences and gun houses in the city. While additional deputy commissioners of police (ADCPs) have been assigned the task to check records and other facts related to arms licences, assistant commissioners of police (ACPs) have been directed to check gun houses in the city.
Assistant commissioner of police (investigation-I) Sumit Sood said, “Checking of gun houses has started. Under this process, we will check the stock of weapons and ammunition of gun houses to ascertain if there is any discrepancy in the record and present stock.”
Asked about fake entries of sale of ammunition by gun houses, ACP Sood said, “Gun houses can issue ammunition to arms licence holders only and even that in a limited number.”
“Police stations are also checking the record of weapons and ammunition issued to an arms licence holder during which record of gun houses and licence holders would be verified.”
Another official said, “Police station-wise physical verification of arms licence has begun. Police teams are visiting houses of licence holders to cross check if the address is correct or the holder is still staying there or not. Even if a person has shifted to another address, he has to intimate the police station concerned.”
“Police are also checking records of ammunition issued to them. For any discrepancy, police stations are writing to senior officials, recommending cancellation of the licence. A daily report is being sent to senior officials in this regard,” an official added.
According to information, some police stations have already written to the top officials for cancellation of some armed licences.
