The Duke of Edinburgh breathed his last during the pandemic in 2021, with lockdown restrictions in Windsor Castle. The duke was 99 at the time of his death, about a few months away from his 100th birthday.

Brandreth, in an excerpt from his forthcoming book, "Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait" says the Duke of Edinburgh had been in a hospital bed in his dressing room at Windsor.

"That morning, he went to the bathroom, helped by a nurse.
“When he came back, he said he felt a little faint and wanted help getting back into bed. The nurse called the Duke's valet and the Queen's page, Paul Whybrew, for help - and he died before the Queen could be called."

Brandreth in his book also claimed that the Queen was not called until after Prince Philip had been pronounced dead by a doctor.

Immediately after Prince Philip’s funeral, the Queen left for her home at the castle.

Brandreth said: "As they tried to comfort the Queen, the Queen was comforting them."

The book by Gyles Brandreth is expected to be out on November 29th. The book details the Queen’s life, the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom.
