Participate in democracy, DK DC tells youth of dist
Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner Ravi Kumar M R called upon everyone who are above 18, to enrol their names in the electoral roll of Dakshina Kannada district, and be part of the nation’s development.
The DC was speaking after flagging off the electoral roll revision awareness jatha, organised by the district administration and zilla panchayat, at the University College, in the city on Thursday.
“India is a democratic nation, where citizens are supreme. From the day they are born, one becomes a citizen of the country. However, a citizen gets the right to exercise a franchise, when he or she turns 18. It is the responsibility of everyone in the country, to enrol themselves in the voter list, for the sake of our nation. People should also participate actively in democracy, by exercising their franchise during elections,” the DC said.
“Keeping in view the nation’s safety and security, a stable government is essential in a democracy. It is possible through the participation of all eligible voters in the election. Normally, elections for the Lok Sabha and legislative assembly are held once in five years. However, it is a fact that a large number of eligible voters remain out of the purview of electoral rolls. Hence, youth who have reached the age of 18, should compulsorily find time in their busy schedules, to submit applications to enrol their names in the voter list,” he said.
The DC also called upon youth to encourage their relatives, friends and neighbours to enrol their names in the voter list. The Central Election Commission (CEC) and the State Election Commission (SEC) have been carrying out electoral roll revision drives, to ensure that no eligible voters are left out. Various awareness campaigns are being held by the district administration, to make all eligible voters enrol themselves for the electoral roll.
