Prince Edward, who was supposed to succeed King Charles as the Duke of Edinburgh, will now miss out on the new title, according to a Palace source.

As King Charles intends to narrow down the monarchy, Prince Edward would not be succeeding his father as the Duke of Edinburgh now.

Around 23 years ago, in an official statement from Buckingham Palace, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie were promised the future title as a gift on their wedding day.

King Charles to keep title

On Prince Philip's death in 2021 (then prince, now King), Charles inherited the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

King Charles will continue to keep the title. However, he will not be using it.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie will not receive the Dukedom of Edinburgh due to the King's decision.

People's response to the King's decision

The local media conducted a poll titled "Should Charles Make Edward The Duke Of Edinburgh?" between November 21 and November 24.

Around 10,135 people participated in the poll, out of which a whopping 94% of them answered positively to the question.

Several people thought King Charles should be honoring his parents' wish, who had promised Prince Edward the Dukedom of Edinburgh.

Though most of the people who participated in the discussion and poll supported Prince Edward receiving the title, some participants believed that it was the King's decision that mattered ultimately.
