Ludhiana: Machhiwara police have arrested a 79-year-old man for abetting his son’s suicide who ended his life allegedly after being slapped by the accused, identified as Harnek Singh.
Jashnpreet Kaur, daughter of deceased Jagtar Singh, told cops that her grandfather, a farmer in Uttar Pradesh, had come to Bhorla Bet village in Machhiwara 18 days back with a new music system. She said as the music system got damaged, Harnek blamed his son Jagtar for it and slapped him.
She and her sister freed their father from their grandfather and went to their respective rooms. She added that when she went to her father’s room at 6am on Wednesday, she found her father hanging from an iron grill in that room.
Jashnpreet alleged that Harnek told everyone that Jagtar died of a heart attack and cremated the body. The complainant said she received a call from her mother and she told the whole story on how her father committed suicide unable to bear the insult. She added that her mother told the whole thing to the relatives and they informed the police. The complainant said that on the arrival of the police party, she got recorded her statement.
Police later booked Harnek under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the IPC.
Inspector Devinder Singh, SHO, Machhiwara police station, said the accused was arrested from Machhiwara area on Thursday morning.
