Coimbatore: The district chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) conducted its sixth edition of the National Higher Education Conclave at a hotel at Neelambur on the outskirts of the city on Thursday. It was themed around reimagining higher education for the future of work.
Addressing the gathering, Kala Vijayakumar, president of Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, said education 4.0 was student centric and would enable them to be creative.
“The gross enrolment ratio in higher education was just 27% in 2020. The target should be 50% by 2035. Education should become more affordable and accessible. In view of the internet revolution, internet connectivity has to be ensured for all. As of January this year, 53% of the Indian population didn’t have internet connectivity,” she said.
Shankar Vanavarayar, vice-chairman, CII state council, said the state school education curriculum was outdated and spending on research was lower compared to the US and Israel. “India needs to spend more on research. Otherwise, the industry will face its repercussions in future.”
R Nandini, chairperson of the conclave, said the entire teaching and learning process in India should be tailored to produce a skilled workforce, who could meet the future challenges and requirements.
S Malarvizhi was the co-chairperson of the conclave.
