Pune: Boy falls off scooter on way to class, truck runs over him

PUNE: A Standard VIII student, riding pillion on his mother’s scooter, was run over by a truck a fter a car hit their vehicle and he fell off it at Shahunagar in the Bhosari MIDC area around 8am on Thursday.
Senior inspector Rajendra Nikalaje of the Bhosari MIDC police said, “The 11-year-old boy was identified as Atharva Alane of Spine Road. His mother, Harshada, lost control ove r the scooter after a car hit their vehicle. They fell on the road and the boy came under the rear wheel of a truck coming from the rear. ”
Nikalaje said Atharva was a student of a private English school in the Pimpri Chinchwad area. His mother would drop him to the institution on a scooter.
“When they reached Ganapati Chowk at Shahunagar on Thursday, a car hit their scooter. Harshada lost her control on the vehicle and both fell down,” Nikalaje said. He said Atharva came under the rear wheel of the truck, which was just behind their scooter. His mother fell on the other side and escaped with minor injuries, Nikalaje said.
He said the residents of the area immediately took the duo to a nearby hospital, where the boy was declared dead on arrival. The officer said the police had detained the dri vers of the car and the truck. Nikalaje said the accident caused traffic congestion in the area.
“Our team removed the truck and the scooter from the road to resume the traffic flow,” he said. Commuters said rough driving had increased on roads in the city limits off late. A resident of Pimpri, on the condition of anonymity said, “There is no fear amo ng a section of people about the consequences of violating the rules whiledriving. The law enforcers should take exemplery action against them. Also, the police should be stricter in implementing the traffic rules. ”
