AIZAWL: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a 54-year-old man, suspected of being a linkman of his Myanmar counterparts, in smuggling of arms from Aizawl to the Myanmar border.
A press statement issued by NIA on Tuesday said Lalringsanga, a resident of Vaivakawn neighbourhood in the capital Aizawl city, was arrested on Monday in connection with the seizure of large amount of explosives at the Mizoram-Myanmar border town of Tipa in south Mizoram's Siaha district.
The case pertained to the recovery of 2,421kg of explosives, 1,000 detonators and 4,500 metres of detonating fuse as well as Rs 73,500 Indian currency and Myanmar currency amounting to 9,35,500 Kyats.
The National Investigation Agency said that the seizure was made in January this year with Section 5 of the Explosives Substances Act, 1908 and Section 14 of Foreigners Act, 1946 being registered at the Tipa police station.
The NIA registered a case against the registration of case by the Tipa police station and took over the investigations into the seizure of explosives in March.
They said that the seized consignment was meant for a Myanmar-based outfit, suspected to be the Chin National Front (CNF), which has been accumulating arms and ammunition for resisting the government of Myanmar. Smuggling of arms, ammunitions and explosives to Myanmar increased after the local civilian resistance force joined hands with the ethnic armed organisations in an anti-coup movement.
The parallel National Unity Government (NUG), formed by former elected legislators in the 2020 general elections, called for united armed resistance - the 'Spring Revolution' - on September 7, in an effort to oust the junta.
Mizoram, which shares a 404km long porous international border with Myanmar, became one of the main conduits for smuggling of arms to the trouble-torn country.
