‘Chief Twit’ Elon Musk has now come up with a new arsenal to counter 'wokeness' - a brand new T-shirt collection, unsubtly named 'Stay@Work'. He introduced the shirt as Twitter's "awesome new merch", on November 24.
Earlier, Musk came under a lot of fire for taking potshots at ‘StayWoke’ T-shirts. The billionaire shared a video where he is seen mocking T-shirts he found inside a closet at the Twitter headquarters in San Francisco. “Found it a closet at Twitter HQ fr,” wrote the Tesla CEO. The video quickly became viral and amassed more than 6.4 million views on Twitter.
For the uninitiated, the ‘StayWoke’ T-shirt collection was designed as a sign of solidarity for the Black employees in Twitter and to spread awareness about various institutional injustices faced by African Americans, especially police violence. ‘Woke’ is a term used to describe a social justice activist who campaigns against human rights violations and discrimination faced by the marginalised.
No wonder, many Twitterati found Musk’s new merch far from funny. One user commented, “Nothing says ‘stay at work’ than firing more than half your staff and then begging the other half not to quit. What’s the Over/Under for Elon facing a board revolt at Tesla? Two months? They must be thrilled Elon is hyping Twitter merch as Tesla’s value craters…… " Another wrote, “That seals it, I’m no longer a Twitter user. Been a loyal supporter since 2006 and this is the final straw. Elon has turned this app into a disaster and it’s only getting worse. Deactivating tonight & taking my talents to Instagram where they run a good app.”
The new Twitter CEO has become one of the most polarised figures in recent times for laying off over 50 per cent of the Twitter workforce. He also reversed several policies regarding hate speech on the microblogging platform. Accounts of many other controversial personalities like Donald Trump and Kanye West had been reinstated in Twitter. In the wake of the Twitter chaos, many A-listers have bid adieu to the ‘bird app’. The microblogging platform witnessed an exodus of several celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Gigi Hadid, Tea Leoni etc.
