Former Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Virmani has been appointed as a full-time member of NITI Aayog, according to an official notification. Arvind Virmani served as the chief economic adviser in the finance ministry (2007-2009).

The government has appointed senior economist and India’s former chief economic advisor Arvind Virmani as a full-time member of NITI Aayog.

The Aayog, which is the government’s premier think-tank, is headed by the Prime Minister and presently has three members, V K Saraswat, Ramesh Chand and VK Paul.

“The Prime Minister has approved the appointment of Shri Arvind Virmani as full-time member, NITI Aayog with immediate effect and until further orders, on the same terms and conditions as are applicable to full-time members of NITI Aayog,” the cabinet secretariat said in a notification.

Arvind Virmani served as the 13th chief economic adviser in the finance ministry from 2007 to 2009.

After this, he worked as executive director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), representing India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan.

He has also served as a member of the technical advisory committee of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monetary Policy from February 2013 to August 2016.

Virmani is the founder-chairman of Foundation for Economic Growth and Welfare.

He published several articles in the areas of macroeconomics, growth and finance, international trade and tariffs and international relations.

His books include The Sudoku of India's Growth, From Uni-polar To Tri polar World: Multi-polar Transition Paradox, Propelling India From Socialist Stagnation To Global Power.
