During the past two years, masks had become an indispensable part of the flying experience for travellers.
Masks are no longer compulsory for air travel in India.

The use of masks won't be needed anymore during air travel, the civil aviation ministry announced on Wednesday.

Till now, wearing masks/face covers was mandatory while flying.

Passengers should, however, preferably use them even as the number of coronavirus cases declines, it said.

The ministry has taken the decision under the government's graded approach to pandemic management, the ministry said in a communication to scheduled airlines.

As per the communication, "... the in-flight announcements henceforth may only mention that in view of the threat posed by COVID-19, all passengers should preferably use mask/face covers.".

The ministry also announced that any reference to fine/penalty related to not wearing masks need not be made during in-flight announcements.

The pandemic has seen a rapid decline in the country of late. The total number of active Covid cases in India only accounts for 0.02 per cent of the total infections as of now.

Latest official numbers showed the recovery rate increasing to 98.79 per cent.

The most recent case fatality rate has been recorded at 1.19 per cent. The number of Covid patients who have recuperated has risen to 4,41,28,580.
