Afghan nat’l held in Karimganj for ‘illegally staying in country’
Silchar: Assam Police arrested an Afghan national in Karimganj district on Monday for allegedly overstaying his visa in India. The arrested person, identified as Madgai Hemat Khail, is a native of Kabul in Afghanistan, police said on Tuesday.
A senior police official said based on a tip-off, an operation was conducted in the Kanishail locality near Karimganj town on Monday evening, and Khail was arrested from his rented accommodation.
Police said Khail had come to India with a valid passport and visa for medical treatment, but did not return to his native country even after his visa had expired. After coming to India, he met a woman, Fatima Begum, a resident of Mangaldai in the Darrang district and later, they got married.
After Khail’s visa expired, he contacted a broker, who arranged several Indian documents, including PAN card, bank passbook, and driving licence, for him. Khail then started living in Guwahati as an Indian citizen. Police recovered several documents, which showed his name as Zahir Khan, from his possession, the official said.
Intially, Khail used to work in a finance company in Guwahati, after which he came to Karimganj for work purpose, and started living at a rented accommodation in Kanishail.
