When Danish Nabi, also known as Daniyal, embarked on a journey to follow his dreams, he had no idea that he would be known as the ‘Ibn Batuta of Kashmir’ for exploring adventure tourism in the Valley. A 30-year-old keen traveler, Danish did not spend a single inactive Sunday over the last decade, either traveling on foot or on a bicycle to travel around the Valley, starting from his own home district Bandipora.
Danish became an explorer in his early twenties, which is the same as Ibn Batuta, thus giving rise to comparisons with the well-known explorer in the lands of Afro-Eurasia. Up to now, Danish has rediscovered more than a dozen Alpine lakes of Himalayan ranges in Bandipora district, thereby making his own small yet important contribution toward improving adventure tourism in the Valley after long dormancy due to political trouble.
Danish said that tourism in Kashmir was previously limited to traveling to few chosen and popular locations, including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Dal Lake. However, he said that the real Kashmir is up in the mountains, which attracted scores of adventure lovers from Europe before the Valley came to be racked by militancy from the late eighties.
Every weekend, Danish ventures out on a journey to the mountains on his bicycle or on foot, finding out lakes and meadows along with unidentified tourist destinations.
