MUMBAI: The Save Rani Bagh Botanical Garden Foundation which is preparing for the 160th year celebration of Rani Bagh to be held on November 19, have found that their seven-year-old demand for getting the designation of the 'botanical' gardens for the popular Byculla gardens and zoo has been sanctioned.
Interestingly the Development Plan (DP) 2014-2034 has created the botanical garden tag for the first time especially for Rani Bagh. The botanical garden today is home to 853 plant species and more than 3,000 trees. The notification came out on September 12 this year and TOI has a copy of the same.
The foundation which over the past many years has tried to negotiate with the civic authorities for the footprint of the green space to be kept as it is, believes that giving importance only to the zoo which came up much later after the inauguration of the erstwhile Victoria Gardens would have unfair.
It may be recollected that in the earlier draft DP released in February 2015 which had to be sent back to drawing board for revision the BMC has designated the V.J.B Udyan as a zoo.
