China's Xi Jinping was the leader everyone wanted to meet at this week's G20 summit, where he took centre stage in a carefully choreographed appearance after three years of self-imposed pandemic isolation.

President Xi strode into Tuesday's G20 summit the morning after a three-hour meeting with his US counterpart Joe Biden in which they promised to dial down the rhetoric and work to close the yawning gap between the two powers.

With smiles and handshakes -- as well as promises of fresh talks on climate change and trade -- Xi appeared keen to paint himself as a magnanimous diplomat ready to confront global challenges and build bridges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had informal interactions with US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron and several other global leaders on Tuesday on the sidelines of the G20 summit here and exchanged views on a range of issues.

In an address at the G20 summit here, Modi said that climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic, the developments in Ukraine and the global problems associated with it have caused havoc in the world and rued that the global supply chains are in "ruins".

Referring to India's upcoming G-20 presidency, Modi said he was confident when the leaders of the grouping meet in the "holy land of Buddha and Gandhi, we will all agree to convey a strong message of peace to the world."

India's energy security important for global growth, says PM Modi at G20 Summit

Calling India's energy security "important" for global growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, said that it is the world's fastest-growing economy.

"India's energy security is also important for global growth, as it is the world's fastest-growing economy. We must not promote any restrictions on the supply of energy and stability in the energy market should be ensured. India is committed to clean energy and the environment," PM Modi said while addressing the G20 working session on Food and Energy Security.

"India is committed to clean energy and environment. By 2030, half of our electricity will be generated from renewable sources. Time-bound and affordable finance and sustainable supply of technology to developing countries is essential for inclusive energy transition," PM added.

PM Modi also said that during India's G-20 Presidency, India will work for global consensus on all these issues.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman today participated in the G20 summit in Bali. He is leading Saudi Arabia's delegation at the G20 summit.

Taking to the official Twitter handle, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said, "His Highness #Crown_Prince Mohammed bin Salman heads the Kingdom's delegation participating in the summit of leaders of countries #G20."

At the G20 summit, Mohammed bin Salman shook hands with French President Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders. He met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

PM Modi to participate in working session on Health

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday will participate in the G20 working session on "Health" and will also address the Indian community at Bali, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

"PM has also met in his intervention in the session. He will now go for the leader's lunch, a little later. Later in the afternoon, we have session 2, which is on health. Thereafter, he will address the Indian community. And then on a welcoming dinner in the evening," MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a video shared on Twitter.

He also said that there will be another session tomorrow, which is on digital transformation and later on, along with the other leaders, PM Modi will visit Mangroove forest.

"A no. of bilaterals are being scheduled for tomorrow. Today, also he met some other leaders in the brimful sides," Bagchi added.

Russia faces G20 calls to end Ukraine war

Russia faced mounting diplomatic pressure to end its war in Ukraine Tuesday, as G20 leaders meeting in Indonesia rued the high cost of the eight-month-old conflict.

In a draft communique, countries including Russia deplored the impact of "the war in Ukraine" -- a conflict that "most members strongly condemned".

The group is also expected to declare that "the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons" is "inadmissible", a veiled rebuke of President Vladimir Putin who has repeatedly raised the spectre of nuclear conflagration.

Indonesia’s Batik fashion grabbing eyeballs at G20 summit

G20 rues economic impact of Ukraine, 'most' condemn war

The Group of 20, including Russia, will deplore the economic impact of the Ukraine conflict, according to a draft communique Tuesday, with most members also condemning the war.

The draft statement, seen by AFP during a summit in Bali, Indonesia, will also call for the extension of a deal with Russia expiring on Saturday that allows the export of Ukrainian grain.

"This year, we have also witnessed the war in Ukraine further adversely impact the global economy," the draft reads.

Countries "reiterated our national positions" and "most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine", it adds.

Cambodian leader leaves G-20 early after COVID-19 diagnosis

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Tuesday he has COVID-19 and is leaving the Group of 20 meetings in Bali, just days after hosting President Joe Biden and other world leaders for a summit in his country's capital.

The diagnosis came as the heads of the G-20 leading economies and other nations began a two-day meeting on the Indonesian resort island.

In a posting on his Facebook page, the Cambodian leader said he tested positive for the coronavirus Monday night and an Indonesian physician confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday morning. He canceled his meetings at the G-20 as well as the upcoming APEC economic forum in Bangkok to return home.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G-20 Summit in Indonesia on Tuesday highlighted India's efforts to further food security for the citizens and said that there is a need to ensure adequate supply chains "as far as food and fertilisers are concerned."

PM Modi, who is in Bali to attend the 17th edition of the G20 Summit, addressed the member countries at the G20 working session on Food and Energy Security.

In his intervention, PM Modi highlighted how India ensured the food security of its 1.3 billion citizens and supplied to many countries in need during the pandemic.

He termed the current shortage of fertilizers in terms of food security is also a huge crisis and said that today's fertilizer shortage is tomorrow's food crisis."

Five central banks agree to enhance cooperation on inclusive cross-border payments at G20

Bank Indonesia, Bank Negara Malaysia, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Bank of Thailand have agreed to strengthen and enhance cooperation on more inclusive cross-border payments.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation in Regional Payment Connectivity was signed on Monday in Bali, Indonesia, on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders' Summit, Singaporean central bank Monetary Authority of Singapore said in a statement.

Biden to press G-20 to hold tough on Russia over Ukraine war

President Joe Biden was set to try to cajole the world's largest economies to further isolate Russia diplomatically and economically over its invasion of Ukraine despite a souring global outlook that has tested other nations' resolve.

In meetings Tuesday at the Group of 20 summit in Indonesia, the U.S. leader is to continue a global tour pressing nations to stand up to Russia and defend Ukraine’s sovereignty in both symbolic and substantive ways. The effort comes as global inflation and slowing economies have put new pressures on countries that imposed penalties on Russia for the nine-month war that has sent food and energy prices soaring.

In opening the summit, Indonesian President Joko Widodo impressed on the gathering what's at stake.

“If the war does not end, it will be difficult for the world to move forward,” Widodo said. “We should not divide the world into parts. We must not allow the world to fall into another cold war.”

Zelensky tells G20 'now is the time' to end Russia's war

Now is the time to end Russia's "destructive" war and "save thousands of lives", Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the G20 summit in Bali via video address on Tuesday.

"I am convinced now is the time when the Russian destructive war must and can be stopped," he said, according to a speech obtained by AFP. "It will save thousands of lives."

Russian President Vladimir Putin was not in the room, however, having shunned the gathering and sent his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Bali in his place.

Zelensky slammed "the crazy threats of nuclear weapons that Russian officials resort to", referring to dark rhetoric by Putin that has made even Beijing uncomfortable.

Cambodia's Hun Sen has COVID-19 at G-20 after hosting summit

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Tuesday he has COVID-19 and is canceling his events at the Group of 20 meetings in Bali, just days after hosting many world leaders, including President Joe Biden, for a summit in Phnom Penh.

In a posting on his Facebook page, the Cambodian leader said that he had tested positive for the coronavirus Monday night and the diagnosis had been confirmed by an Indonesian physician on Tuesday morning. He said he was returning to Cambodia and was canceling his meetings at the G-20 as well as the following APEC economic forum in Bangkok.

Cambodia was the host of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation summit that ended on Sunday, and Hun Sen met with many leaders who attended one-on-one.
