Minister at VDS fete: Education should help build character
Gadag: The British who ruled India for two centuries introduced an education system that was aimed at making the Indians slaves and realising this, people like Lok Manya Tilak gave call for establishment of schools that will instill nationalism among the children, said minister for school education B C Nagesh.
Speaking at the valedictory of the centenary celebration of Vidya Dan Samiti (VDS) here on Sunday, he said VDS was established as a response to Tilak’s call in 1920, and has done a wonderful job in a span of 102 years.
Educationist Gururaj Karjagi said education should help build character and it should not aim just at giving degrees and certificates. He said the students, over the years, may forget the subjects taught to them but will certainly remember the values taught to them in schools and colleges.
While delivering the presidential address, Gadag MLA H K Patil, an alumni, said private educational institutions in north Karnataka established and run by freedom fighters, social activists and religious heads have played a major role in providing education to many, and the government should support them in all possible manner.
Siddaram Swami of Tontadarya Mutt, Kallayyajja, head of Veereshwar Punyashrama, former MLAs D R Patil, S S Patil, B R Yavagal, MLC S V Sankanur and others were present.
