Mysuru: After a gap of two years, Canine Club of Mysore (CCM) aims to microchip dog breeds in Mysuru ahead of the National Dog Show scheduled for January. The drive will be done at Vidyaranyapuram Vet hospital campus. CCM president BP Manjunath said the drive was organized to facilitate pet owners to register their dog breeds so that they can become eligible to compete in the national level competition. There are many pet owners who purchase dogs from unregistered breeders and end up fretting later. To educate more about the dogs, the club has conducted competition and awareness events.
“So far, we have micro chipped nearly 500 pets in Mysuru after verifying the genuineness of the dog breed. A recognized judge attached to Kennel Club of India (KCI), which maintains a registry of purebred dogs in India, will examine the pets and issue them certificates,” said Manjunath.
The certificate is useful for the owners for three main purposes. Firstly, it comes handy in recognizing their dog if it gets lost. If the dog is microchipped, they can identify their pet easily using scanners. Secondly, the pet’s lineage details are available. Finally, the dogs become eligible to compete in national level dog shows where only KCI-registered dogs are allowed to contest.
Pets will be examined by the judge from Bengaluru and then will be microchipped which carries complete information of the dog like its parents and grandparents. There will also be a mention about genetic problems, if any.
“Mysuru has some 25 registered breeders and about 30 different dog breeds including Mudhol hound, Pashmi, Rajapalayam, great Dane, golden retriever, labrador, German and Belgian shepherd, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Belgian mastiff and rottweiler are found in the city. About 2,500 owners have maintained the lineage of their pets,” Manjunath claimed.
Vineeth Srinath, an industrialist and a popular recognized breeder of pets, said microchipping for dogs must be done to maintain its unique identity. “It is just like Aadhaar identification that we have. This helps pet owners in many ways as well as to maintain its purebred lineage,” he said.
Vineeth has imported a golden retriever dog from Europe and he currently has some 30 retrievers in his kennel
