Jazz Money is a poet and artist whose work involves installation, digital, performance film and print. Their work has been performed on stages around the world including at TEDx Sydney and the Edinburgh International Book.

In 2020, herbest-selling debut poetry collection How to Make a Basket won the David Unaipon Award. In 2022, Jazz was also a recipient of the prestigious Dreaming Award from the Australia Council for the Arts for poetry.

Money, who will be conducting workshops this weekend as part of the Tata Lit festival, says, “I came to India about 9 years ago and am so delighted to be back. Mumbai is one of my favourite cities in the world - it’s so vibrant and so exciting, and somehow every area feels so distinct.”

In an interview with ETPanache she talks about why diversity is the order of the day.

A cause for inclusion

To me, inclusion means that everyone has a voice. Every workplace is made better by a diversity of voices. It ensures adaptability and futurity, wider engagement and richer community. Listen to people whose voices have been traditionally overlooked. Step back to make space for those voices. Allow people to self determine their own needs and assist in accessing the pathways to getting there.

Media matters
I am a true believer that stories change the world. Films, novels, performances, poetry, television, talk. Narratives are key to creating empathy, and society needs empathy to address the issues facing our world.

Girl power
To uplift women especially we need to encourage and champion one another. Make sure you hold the door open as you move through your career and are actively creating pathways for young ones to come up in the world. To create a meaningful impact, given all that is going on in the world, the best thing one can do is to listen to women. Understand the intersections of our experiences and identities are key to the way we engage with the world. Don’t speak on behalf of people, step aside and give the platforms for women to speak for themselves.

Inspiration
Everything inspires my writing. I love poetry because it allows for complexity and beauty and harshness to co-exist, as it does everywhere in the world. I write about about the world I live in, the worlds I have inherited and the worlds I hope for. Some of the people I admire are my Aboriginal Elders who have maintained culture and community.

Look out for
Amrita Hepi is a Bundjulung Aboriginal and Ngapuhi Maori choreographer and dancer who makes some of my favourite art in Australia.
