Mangaluru: The management of St Aloysius College here recognized over 590 students for their achievements in sports and academics by awarding them scholarships totalling about Rs 30 lakh. Three kinds of scholarships were awarded to the students on Wednesday and Thursday.
The scholarships were categorized as Vidwath Spoorthi (merit scholarships), Vidya Spoorthi and Kreeda Spoorthi (sports scholarship). Vidwath Spoorthi is in recognition of the excellent performance of the first-year degree students; 116 students who had scored 90% or above, in their grade 12 exams were selected.
The recipients of Kreeda Spoorthi were shortlisted based on their achievements at international, national, state, and university-level sports events. Vidya Spoorthi scholarship is awarded to students who have excelled in academics but come from economically poor backgrounds.
“A total of 590 students were awarded the scholarships. The college used to give scholarships, but this is the first time that all beneficiaries are honoured in public. The scholarships are sponsored by the alumni of the college, well-wishers, and the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society (MJES),” said Alwyn D’Sa, registrar of the college.
Fr Melwin Pinto, rector of St Aloysius Institutions; guests of honour Raymond D’Souza, former Mr World / International Body Builder; and Sunil Kunder, president of St Aloysius College Alumni Association (SACAA) attended the Kreeda Spoorthi and Vidwath Spoorthi scholarship programmes on Wednesday.
During the Vidya Spoorthi Scholarship programme, chief guest Dr PP Devan, professor, ENT at AJ Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Mangaluru, said, “Education should be beyond getting a job. It should not be for livelihood, but for life. It must make a sense of humanity. A well-educated person must know to differentiate between human and inhuman, or just and unjust practices. We should acquire a sense of what the real purpose of life is.”
He explained the necessity of developing an emotional quotient and networking quotient for a successful career after formal education.
