Govt removes guv as chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam
Thiruvananthapuram: In an indication of its intent to remove governor Arif Mohammed Khan as chancellor of universities, the state government on Thursday amended the rules of Kerala Kalamandalam deemed to be university for arts and culture to replace him from the chancellor's post.
Kalamandalam being a deemed-to-be university run by it, the state government can decide its matters, including who should be the chancellor. The governor was functioning as its chancellor based on a government order issued in 2015.
The executive order said an eminent person in the field of art and culture would be appointed chancellor. The chancellor’s tenure will be five years and shall be eligible for reappointment for one more term; provided no person shall be eligible to hold the office on attaining the age of 75 years. In the absence of the chancellor or during his inability to act, the pro-chancellor shall exercise all powers and perform all functions of the chancellor, it said.
The cabinet had on Wednesday decided to bring in an ordinance to replace the governor as chancellor of 14 universities in the state.
