GURUGRAM: Three persons have been arrested for allegedly smuggling cows. They were caught near Tigra crossing after their truck overturned on Wednesday. Cops said they were chased by gau rakshaks.
There were six people in the pickup van. Three of them escaped, police said.
The three accused held have been identified as Iqlas, Sarif, and Waris. Permjeet Singh, a gau rakshak, had received information that a truck carrying cattle was heading to Rajasthan.
He informed the police while chasing the truck.
“I was informed that a truck carrying cattle was going to Rajasthan. A few gau rakshaks joined us in the chase. At around 2.30am, a truck near Darbaripur caught our attention. When they were was asked to stop, they accelerated and hit our vehicle from the side. We kept following them,” said Singh in his complaint.
Stone pelting between the cow smugglers and gau rakshaks was reported by the police. In its attempt to escape, the accused tried to speed away and lost control over the truck. The accused suffered injuries too. While the accused were chased they kept throwing cows from their pickup trucks to distract them, said the police.
An FIR has been registered against the accused at Sector 56 police station under sections 307, 279, 336, 34, and 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and relevant sections of Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan Act.
