VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Thursday initiated a drive against haphazard parking and abandoned vehicles that pose a risk to the lives of people in its jurisdiction.
MMC chairperson Leo Rodrigues told TOI, "MMC has identified 59 abandoned and scrap vehicles lying along the roadside, causing inconvenience to other vehicular traffic and also creating a nuisance in Vasco town. We have discussed the issue with Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar and Vasco traffic cell in-charge Shailesh Narvekar one month ago. The owners of the vehicles were intimated about the drive and a reminder was also sent to them eight days ago to move their vehicles before the drive begins."
"The MMC will now make arrangements for parking of four and two-wheelers after clearing the scrapped and abandoned vehicles. We could also install signboards so that other vehicles can be parked easily and comfortably," said Rodrigues. He further informed that such a drive against the haphazard parking, scrap and abandoned vehicle will be initiated in Mangor-Hill area, and thereafter it will be launched in the remaining wards of the MMC.
The MMC chairperson has warned people of haphazard parking as well as double parking. MMC carried out the drive with the assistance of the Vasco traffic cell. A crane was used to lift heavy vehicles like trucks and buses, besides junk rickshaws and cars.
