Special training for medical staff
Thiruvananthapuram: A special training session on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), a blood purification technique for animals, was held for the medical staff at Government Multi Speciality Veterinary Hospital at Kudappanakunnu here on Thursday.
The session was led by a professor in the clinical medicine department of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) on Thursday.
“Kerala is a state where poisonous snakes like Vipers, Cobras and Krait are common. Animals getting bitten by these should be subjected to anti-venom treatment immediately. Any delay will cause renal and empathic failure. In such cases, CRRT can be adopted,” an official said.
Leptospirosis-induced renal failure can also be cured with this machine.
“This is the first time a CRRT machine is being introduced in the state. As part of the training here, we operated on a dog suffering from Pyometra, an inflammatory condition in the uterus and acute kidney failure,” said assistant director of the hospital Dr T Rajeev.
Meanwhile, a dialysis unit and anaesthesia workstation will be opened at the hospital on November 23.
