NOIDA: A senior executive of a private company knocked down his condominium’s security in-charge with his sedan as he sped out of the compound on Tuesday evening, making a getaway from a police team that had gone there to arrest him in a rape case.
The desperate escape and the sedan dashing into Ashok Mavi—carrying him on the bonnet and then braking momentarily, sending Mavi tumbling to the ground—was captured on the society’s CCTV cameras.
The footage also shows other guards posted at the condominium—Amrapali Zodiac in Sector 120—and a police team rushing towards the car in an attempt to stop it, but in vain.
Police said the Zodiac resident is accused of rape by a former colleague at an electrical equipments manufacturer. The complaint was filed around a month and a half ago. The accused has since then changed companies and is currently general manager at a firm based in Gurgaon, a police officer said. The accused has been on the run since the case was registered, the officer added.
On Tuesday evening, police got information that he was at his apartment in tower D of Zodiac. “A police team was sent to arrest him but he got to know about their presence in the society. He escaped in his car, driving it at high speed and seriously injured Ashok Mavi, who was standing at the gate,” said Sharad Kant, station house officer (SHO) of the Sector 113 police station, which is handling the rape investigation. The executive now finds himself booked in another case under sections 279 (rash driving), 427 (mischief causing damage), 338 (causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Mavi, who suffered injuries in his shoulders and legs, was taken to hospital. His condition is stable. Speaking to TOI, Mavi said the driver of the sedan struck him down near Gate No. 2 of the society.
“I was on the phone when I spotted the speeding car coming out of the basement. I signalled to it to slow down as residents walk around in the complex. But the driver came straight at me. The force was such that I was hit inside the compound but landed on the ground beyond the gate. While his car got stuck at the gate, I got a chance to move aside. But in no time, he sped away again. He could have crushed me," Mavi said. Police said teams had been formed to track down the accused.
