UDHAGAMANDALAM: A male leopard was found dead in a private tea estate in Horasolai village of the Kattabettu forest range in Kotagiri on Wednesday. Estate workers had found the two-day-old carcass. A postmortem was conducted by the forest veterinarian as per the guidelines prescribed by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in the presence of forest officials, members from NGOs and the local body.
The animal was six years old, assistant conservator of forests Saravanakumar said. “It might not have eaten for 10 days as its stomach was found flat. Preliminary postmortem report suggested that the animal could have been suffering from some disease because of which it could not eat. There were no external or internal wounds.”
Samples of the vital parts from the carcass were collected for lab tests and the carcass was burnt in the nearby forest area. tnn
