THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Congress-led UDF has fared well in the byelections to the local bodies in the state by winning 15 of 29 wards in which polls were held.
While the LDF won 12 wards, the BJP won two.
While the UDF made gains by winning nine wards that included seven wards that were previously the sitting seats of the LDF and two of the BJP, the LDF won two wards that were previously with the UDF. The BJP won an additional seat that was previously the sitting seat of the LDF.
The bypolls were held in the wards of the local bodies in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, on Wednesday.
In the local body elections held in 2020, the LDF had got a majority in grama panchayats, corporations and district panchayats, while the UDF had emerged at the top in municipalities, by winning 45 out of 86 municipalities in the state.
Opposition leader V D Satheesan said the results are a befitting reply to the LDF which has become blind with arrogance after it won a consecutive second term in the assembly elections.
He said that the UDF would make further inroads in the upcoming elections as well.
Congratulating the UDF winners, KPCC president K Sudhakaran said that the results showed how much the people of the state were fed up with the LDF rule.
