Guwahati: Over 60% of India’s international borders in the northeastern side with four countries — China,
Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan — is porous which, along with internal socio-economic and historical factors, have caused a “fragile security situation” in the region, the MHA stated in its 2020-21 annual report.
The ministry report added that the fragile security situation has “resulted in violence, extortion and diverse demands by various Indian Insurgent Groups (IIGs) which maintain safe havens/ camps in neighbouring countries.”
“The Indo-Bangladesh border is marked by a high degree of porosity and the checking of illegal cross border activities and illegal migration from Bangladesh to India have been major challenges,” it said.
Of this 1800-km long border in northeast shared by Assam, Meghalaya,
Tripura and Mizoram, over 390 km is still unfenced. The report adds that all the ongoing fencing work will be completed by March, 2024 and sanction has also been accorded to replace the old design fence with a new one.
