Fresh cases of Covid-19 fall below 100 in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI/PUDUCHERRY: Fresh cases of Covid-19 went below the 100-mark on Wednesday, when the state reported 96 new cases compared to 104 on Tuesday and 109 cases on Monday. After discharging 142 Covid-19 patients from the state registry the active cases fell to 862 on Wednesday. The cumulative death tally since March 2020 was 38,048.
The last time the state reported fewer than 100 cases was 162 days ago on May 31, after which cases began to spike. On June 1, the state reported 138 new cases following new clusters in education institutions and workplaces. By the second week of July, the state reported around 2700 cases. With micro containment plans and increased testing, cases began to fall.
On Wednesday, Chennai (24) continued to report the maximum number of new cases in the state and was the only district in the state to report cases in two digits. After Chennai, Chengalpet and Kanyakumari recorded nine new cases, followed by six in Salem and five each in Coimbatore, Kancheepuram and Virudhunagar.
Of the 862 active cases, there were 205 in Chennai, 68 in Chengalpet and 65 in Kanyakumari. There were three cases in Kallakurichi, Theni and Tirupathur - least in the state. Among the active patients 218 were admitted to hospitals across the state - 86 of them were in oxygen beds, 28 in the ICU and 104 in the wards.
Meanwhile, the Union territory of Puducherry reported four fresh Covid-19 cases even as 10 patients recovered in the last 24 hours ending at 10am on Monday bringing down the number of active cases to 46. tnn
