Jaipur: Justice Pankaj Mithal, the chief justice of Rajasthan High Court, said on Wednesday that character building of every citizen is necessary to remove social evils and that laws like POCSO Act can be implemented in a true sense only then.
Justice Mithal, who is also the chief patron of the State Legal Services Authority, was speaking as the chief guest at a ceremony on the occasion of Legal Services Day organized by Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RALSA) in Jaipur. Justices Prakash Gupta and Pankaj Bhandari of the high court were present as special guests of the programme.
Following Mahatma Gandhi’s principles could help take society on the path of reform, said Justice Mithal, emphasizing the need for good value-based education and a system in which citizens pay equal attention to their duties and rights.
A campaign for “Freedom from Untouchability & Prevention of Atrocities of SC/ST Community & Legal Assistance to Child Victims of Offenses under the POCSO Act, 2012” was launched on the occasion. RALSA released posters, banners and a film on the subject of providing easy and accessible justice to the poor and helpless.
Justice Prakash Gupta, president, Rajasthan High Court Legal Services Committee (RHCLSC), said RALSA aims at providing legal aid to poor and helpless prisoners, especially women, and to get them released. He informed that special awareness camps and street plays were being organized by various district legal services authorities for this purpose.
RHCLSC arbitration in-charge Justice Pankaj Bhandari said arbitration is an important option as an alternative judicial system. “By using this option, disputes among the public are resolved by mutual consent and in an easy way. A total of 398 cases have been successfully settled through arbitration so far this year,” he said.
