KEONJHAR: Forest officials in Keonjhar have recovered the decomposed bodies of a 25-year-old female elephant and a newborn calf from Kalapat reserve forest under Telkoi range on Monday. The elephant is suspected to have been killed with a poisoned arrow about a week back.
Sources said villagers who had gone to the forest to collect minor produce got a foul smell and informed the forest officials. After a search led by local forester Jadumani Rana, the decomposed carcasses were recovered. The divisional forest officer of Keonjhar, H D Dhanraj, later reviewed the situation. "We are verifying the cause of death as we found some injury marks on the elephant's body." the DFO said.
Sources said that despite huge funds poured into protection of elephants, those engaged in monitoring the movement of elephants could not detect the foul smell while patrolling.
