AURANGABAD: Two destitute residing on the footpath outside Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Aurangabad, were found murdered sometime in the early hours of Monday.
Within 12 hours of the incident coming to light, Begumpura police arrested a 32-year-old suspect identified as Shaikh Nazir on charges of committing double murder.
Police said that the deceased have been identified as Nageshwar alias Nago Maharaj Ghuse (50) and Sangharam Rankat (70). The accused as well as the victim had been residing on the footpath for years and were addicts.
The incident came to light at around 8.30 am, following which a team from Begumpura police station rushed to the spot.
Citing the preliminary report, inspector Prashant Potdar said prima facie it appears that Nageshwar was murdered by bludgeoning his head with a stone while the other person has been strangulated to death by using a rope.
The officer said that the victims and the accused are amongst number of destitute people residing on the footpaths in the vicinity of GMCH. “We are going to reach out to appropriate agencies for addressing the issue of these large number of homeless people residing on the footpaths,” said Potdar.
Those privy to the probe said that the police are awaiting for the accused to regain his senses so that he can be questioned about the trigger that led to double murder of his friends. The accused has been sent for medical examination. Based on the opinion of medical officers, the accused will be taken in for interrogation.
