PATNA: In a case of alleged drunk driving, two persons were run over and five others injured as a van driver knocked them down in Muzaffarpur district on Sunday evening.
The accused driver Rakesh, a resident of Ghorasahan in East Champaran, was arrested and sent to jail.
According to police, the driver was on way to Sheohar from Muzaffarpur during which he hit a passerby standing on the roadside at Chhegan Neura. "A bike rider started chasing him. In panic, he accelerated the speed of the van to escape the people's wrath and drove for about 4kms while knocking down six other people on the way before the vehicle dashed against an autorickshaw and overturned," a police officer said.
The incident took place near Ganjbazar intersection at Manikpur panchayat under Minapur police station area in the district. The deceased had been identified as
Sanjay Kumar (30), the son of Gaurishankar Sahni of Manikpur, and 75-year-old Devki Rai of Mahdeiya village. Devki died due to brain haemorrhage during treatment at SKMCH.
After first aid, Ashok Prasad of Bahbal Bazar and
Dilip Kumar of Mahdeiya village were referred to SKMCH for treatment.
Minapur police station SHO Rajesh Kumar said, "The breathalyser test confirmed that the accused driver was under the influence of alcohol. After hitting a person, he sped his vehicle from Khemaipatti toward Manikpur and ran over several people, killing two," Rajesh told TOI on Monday.
