Kerala: Sea recedes at Varkala, collector allays concerns
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The sea withdrew upto around 50 metres at Varkala Papanasham beach near the bali mandapam on Tuesday evening, triggering mild panic among the local residents.
Kerala state disaster management authority issued a note saying that it was a local phenomenon and that there was no warning of earthquake or Tsunami in the Arabian sea or in the Indian ocean.
District collector Geromic George said that there was no need for concerns however people were advised against venturing into the sea when it receded. KSDMA attributed the phenomenon to wind change or lunar eclipse.
Recently similar phenomenon was reported at the Kothi beach near Nainamvalappu in Kozhikode.
Sea had receded upto 50 metres in October. Sea had receded prior to the occurrence of Tsunami and Ockhi cyclone which caused panic among the residents.
The district disaster management authority has been directed to keep vigil and take adequate precautions.
