KOLKATA: On Monday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee led the city in the prayers on the occasion of Guru Purnima. Banerjee said that Punjab and Bengal share a deep bond and both the states had taken the lead in the fight against British rule.
The CM participated in a ceremony to commemorate the 553rd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak at Shahid Minar Grounds.
“If you go to Andaman Cellular jail and see the list of people who fought against British rule, you will see that people from Punjab and Bengal had taken the lead in the fight,” said the CM. “Punjab and Bengal have a lot of things in common and share a deep bond. The people of Punjab fight and work for the nation. I salute the state of Punjab and its people,” she said.
British Deputy High Commissioner Nick Low said, “Guru Nanak said the universe is the body of God. Climate change is a moral issue. It is so encouraging and astonishing that 84% of the world identifies as religious. As faith leaders, I urge you to encourage those who follow you to look after this God given planet. It is a noble cause that will keep all of is working together with a common purpose.”
In keeping with the environmental theme of this year’s Guru Nanak Jayanti, various Gurdwaras have planned to congregate at Maidan ground for Kirtan and Langar on Tuesday. “This is the day to re-dedicate ourselves to Guru Nanak Dev ji’s mission for an inclusive and harmonious society,” said Satnam Singh Ahluwalia, IHA Foundation chairman and general secretary of Behala Gurdwara.
Kolkata schools also participated in Guru Nanak Jayanti after a gap of two years. Sunita Arora, principal of DPS Howrah said, “Our school celebrated it in a big way. We also had an environmental river cleaning programme on Sunday.“
