Assam: Trade union leader held for 'Maoist links'
SILCHAR: A trade union leader has been arrested for his suspected links with Maoists. Crime branch sleuths caught Dharitri Sharma, leader of the Assam Mojuri Shramik Union, on Saturday evening and took him to Guwahati for interrogation.
SP (Cachar) Nomal Mahatto told media persons on Monday, "It was while probing into the cases against a number of Maoist leaders, who have been arrested over the last few years, that Sharma was found to be linked with rebel groups, including a key leader of CPI (Maoist)'s northeast chapter, Anukul Chandra Naskar alias Paresh Da. Anukul was arrested in Silchar a few years ago."
Sources said Sharma was summoned and taken to the Silchar Sadar police station on Saturday. After initial questioning there, he was taken into custody in the evening. Sources said the Assam Sramik Majuri Union Cachar district committee, led by Sharma, has recently announced a series of agitations.
