Bhubaneswar: As many as 49 candidates have applied for the post of vice-chancellor of Sambalpur University, a record of sorts in the recent past. The post fell vacant after former VC Sanjiv Mittal resigned in August on medical grounds.
The higher education department has started rejected applications of three candidates on the grounds of age limit and lack of experience. Following this, 46 candidates are eligible to participate in the appointment process.
Thirty-seven of the eligible applicants belong to educational institutions outside the state. The remaining applicants belong to higher educational institutions in the state.
Official sources said a committee of the department has completed the screening of the applications. It will interview the applicants and select three eligible candidates from the 46 for the final round. The government will send the names of the three selected candidates to governor Ganeshi Lal, chancellor of state public universities, for interview. The governor will interview the three candidates and select one for the post of VC, the sources said. The department had issued advertisements in September seeking applications from candidates for the post of VC, after Mittal’s resignation.
He was appointed as the VC of Sambalpur University on January 20 last year. During his brief tenure, he was mired in controversies. There was an allegation that he was involved in financial irregularity and mismanagement of university funds.
