Colva: Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas on Sunday demanded that Sal river be cleaned immediately for the mess created by the sewerage treatment plant (STP) at Shirvodem by discharging raw sewage into the river.
“I call upon the Goa State Pollution Control Board and the environment minister Nilesh Cabral who is accountable to clear the mess,” he said.
Cabral, during an inspection, had a diatribe with Viegas on Saturday. The Benaulim MLA was demanding that a system be put in place to stop violation of environmental laws by the contractor engaged to run the STP.
Cabral, who also officiates as the chairman of Sewerage and Infrastructural Development Corporation Of Goa, told the presspersons that disciplinary action and even suspension of officials involved in the operation of the plant would be considered.
He also conceded that raw sewage was being let into the Sal due to operational fault and assured to find a permanent solution.
