- Academician Mohan Gopal had opened the arguments in the case before the bench on September 13 and opposed the EWS quota amendment by terming it as “deceitful and a backdoor attempt" to destroy the concept of reservation.

- Tamil Nadu, represented by senior advocate Shekhar Naphade, had also opposed the EWS quota, saying the economic criteria cannot be the basis for classification and the top court will have to revisit the Indira Sawhney (Mandal) judgement if it decides to uphold this reservation.

- On the other hand, the then attorney general and the solicitor general had vehemently defended the amendment, saying the reservation provided under it was different and had been given without disturbing the 50 per cent quota meant for the socially and economically backward classes (SEBC).

- Hence, the amended provision does not violate the basic structure of the Constitution, they had said. (News18)

Five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court upholds the validity of the Constitution's 103rd Amendment Act 2019, which provides for the 10 per cent EWS reservation amongst the general category.

Four judges uphold the Act while one judge passes a dissenting judgement.

US President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump have held duelling rallies to fire up voters as campaigning for Tuesday`s midterm elections is slated to end on Monday.

On Sunday, while Biden spoke at a rally in New York to support Governor Kathy Hochul, Trump made his last-minute plea to voters in Miami, reports the BBC.

Addressing voters at the Sarah Lawrence College, the President called the upcoming election "an inflection point" that will determine the next 20 years, adding that the people were choosing between two "fundamentally different visions of America".

In his address that lasted for over an hour, Trump slammed the Democrats for leading the country towards "communism".

Stubble burning increased by 160 pc in Rajasthan, 20 pc in Punjab in Oct: Jitendra Singh

Expressing serious concern over Delhi's air quality remaining in the 'severe' category for the fifth day in a row, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that air pollution-related stubble burning cases have witnessed a rise by 160 per cent in Rajasthan and 20 per cent in Punjab this October as compared to October 2021.

According to the Ministry of Earth Science, the Union Minister also raised an alarm as Delhi recorded seven "very poor" air quality days in October this year compared to none in October 2021.

Singapore Airlines H1 results soar as world reopens

Last week, Singapore Airlines, the city-state's national carrier, reported a record first-half operating profit of SGD 1.23 billion (USD876 million) for the period which ended in September. It was also the best-ever quarterly profit of SGD 678 million, eclipsing the previous best of SGD 674.6 million achieved almost 15 years ago in Q3 2007-08.

Apple iPhone output at China assembly plant in Zhengzhou reduced

Apple on Sunday (local time) said that it has temporarily reduced iPhone 14 production because of COVID-19 restrictions at its assembly plant in China.

Apple said that it will ship fewer units, and customers will have to wait longer.

"The facility is currently operating at significantly reduced capacity," Apple's statement read.

It means that iPhone 14 shipments could be impacted ahead of the Christmas shopping season.

The move will significantly impact Apple's quarterly sales and make it harder for consumers to get their hands on Apple's high-end models.
"We continue to see strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models," said Apple press release.
