Kolkata: Colleges focus on campus training, career workshops

KOLKATA: Colleges and universities have shifted their focus on career counselling and campus placements after successfully completing the UG and PG admissions.
While some institutes are organising career counselling workshops and courses on the campus, others are inviting companies to hire freshers from the campus.

According to principals, they want to help the students improve their profile and upskill themselves and make themselves industry-ready. The colleges and universities also want to help the students to network and learn new skills that are in demand in the industry post-pandemic.
"We want our students to look beyond the traditional avenues and explore the start-up ecosystem for opportunities. There is immense potential as several home grown start-ups have achieved high valuations globally," said an official of Presidency University. The university encouraged its students who have just passed out to apply for the application trainee programme for one of the biggest edtech companies in the country by sharing all the details on the university's website.
Scottish Church College is starting a certificate course for its students for management entrance preparations where students will be trained in verbal ability, logical reasoning, data interpretation and group discussions. The course is scheduled to start in the last week of November.
"We aim to prepare our students for CAT 2023 and other management tests through this course," said a college official. Last month, the college also conducted a counselling session on scope and opportunities in the government sector and how students can prepare themselves for the opportunities.
Asutosh College is also conducting a career counselling and training certificate course for students of fifth semester. Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira in Belur is starting a coaching course for WBCS aspirants. "Many students have a lot of potential but they do not receive the right guidance. Through this course, we want to prepare students for all aspects of the qualification process," said an official of the college.
"Several companies are looking to hire freshers after the pandemic. We want our students to make full use of the opportunity. We aim to train them so that they are prepared for the industry," said the principal of a north Kolkata college.
