Chandrapur: A female leopard accidentally fell into a well in village Kitali (Bodra) in South Bramhapuri forest range, and was rescued after a 3-hour operation on Friday. The three-year-old leopardess fell into the village well while chasing hens, said local villagers.
Official sources informed that the village is completely surrounded by forest. Villagers heard the roars of leopard from a well located near the residence of one Santosh Meshram and found the leopardess barely able to stay afloat in the water, scratching the walls of the well. They immediately informed forest officials and a team led by RFO Ramchandra Shende rushed to the spot for rescue.
As the news of leopard getting trapped in the well reached surrounding villages, a mob of over 1,000 people gathered on the scene. People said that the leopard was after hens in the village and fell into the well while chasing them.
Foresters first cleared the crowd around the well and began their rescue operation. RFO Shende said they lowered an open cage with ropes into the well. After some effort, the leopardess climbed into the cage. The beast in the cage was later removed from the scene and released into the jungle.
